Taymour Grahne Projects is pleased to present Time and Space, a solo exhibition by NYC-based artist Matthew F Fisher, opening on April 2 between 4-7pm at the Holland Park space (10 Portland Road) as part of a joint opening across our 3 spaces.

Matthew F Fisher’s practice revolves around aspects of the natural world that always seem to point towards the infinite. An ode to the greatness of space and nature, Fisher’s upcoming solo at Taymour Grahne Projects is divided into two main themes, from which the human figure is absent. Half of the works featured depict impressions of outer space while the rest focus on the artist’s more traditional motifs. These markers and metaphors – the Moon, the Wave, the Seashell – are frequently encountered in Fisher’s work and function as metaphors for the kind of space and time that is beyond the limits of human perception.

Fisher explores the cosmos from both a universal yet also a deeply personal perspective. Depictions of the contrast between light and darkness, calm oceans painted in mesmerising blues, cloudless skies and gigantic stellar objects all contribute to the viewer's constant shift in scale and perspective. Fisher has previously explored this idea through seascapes and skyscapes, however taking his imagery to the stars has allowed space for even further experimentation.

Every element in Fisher’s works is characterised by a calming sense of stillness. Capturing a wink in time or a perfectly structured moment, shooting stars and wild waves appear static and frozen projecting a comforting cosmic sense of timelessness. This meditative approach contrasts the ever changing universe, where all parts are in constant motion. His carefully constructed stillness serves as an idealised view on the vastness of the universe and attempts to capture its mysterious magical essence that can feel so familiar at the same time.

I love working on paintings of our solar system and walking outside the studio at night, looking up, and seeing stars knowing that each one has its own cast of characters revolving around it. And that maybe, someone else could be looking down on me.

Matthew F Fisher (b. 1976 in Boston, MA) currently lives and works in New York. His works are included in public and corporate collections, such as the New York City Department of Eduction - Public Art for Public Schools, Fidelity Investments, Boston, MA; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA and Dogfish Brewery, Milton, DE. He has shown nationally and internationally, with solo exhibitions at Ochi Projects, Los Angeles, CA; SHRINE, New York, NY; Taymour Grahne, London, UK; Johansson Projects, Oakland, CA; Over Under Room, Brooklyn, NY; and Taymour Grahne Gallery, New York, NY among others. His work has been included in exhibitions at the SEASON, Seattle, WA; Colombus State University; Columbus, GA; The Hole, New York, NY; Rowe Gallery, St Augustin, FL; and international venues including the Dot Project in London and Groeflin Maag Galerie in Basel, Switzerland. He is a recipient of the Pollock Krasner Foundation grant, the painting fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts and a full fellowship from the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT. Matthew received a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design (1998) and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University (2000). He has completed one artist residency at Pasaquan, Buena Vista, GA and two in Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, NY. He also participated at the Millay Colony for the Arts taking place in Austerlitz, NY.
