The American novelist Paul Auster proposed that there are two ways to see the world: travel the globe sucking up as much experience as you can or stay in one place and come to know it deeply. However, his hypothesis neglects to account for the ever-changing topography of our lives, more precisely, how the hometowns of our youth morph into places unfamiliar to us. For the first two decades of his life, Demetrius Wilson called Boston home. Now from the perspective of his final year as a Hunter College MFA in New York City, he can recollect those formatives days at a critical distance: the picnics and BBQs, the music blaring from a passing ice cream truck, playing dominos with neighbors. What Used To Be Is Only a Memory amalgamates these experiences into a distillation of new abstract paintings by Demetrius. In Bright Lights Amidst This Chaos the artist was intrigued by John Singer-Sargent’s Coronation painting.
“The pinks and greens contained such great light,” he explains. “I wanted to expand upon that drama.” We can see influences ranging from the Alphabet paintings of William Anastasi to Cecily Brown and Sam Gilliam. “Time is an illusion but it is also a tool that can be manipulated in order to understand the grand schemes that shape our visual realities,” concludes the artist. “In that way, we are all connected.” – Bill Powers
