Fayçal Baghriche (b.1972) is a multidisciplinary French – Algerian artist. He studied Fine Art at Villa Arson in Nice before moving to Paris, where he currently lives and works.
His practice originated in performance videos, out of the traditional studio space and immersed into public spaces, using his body as the main subject to disrupt the routines of everyday life. His recent work oscillates between sculpture, photography, installation, video and performance. These varied approaches reflect his interest in exploring the intersections of different cultures and the diverse narratives that shape human experience.
Baghriche’s practice is rooted in the blending of his Algerian upbringing and his experiences of living in Europe. His work explores themes related to the cultural exchange between the two continents, addressing issues such as identity, memory, borders, migration and globalisation. A central focus in Baghriche’s work is the negotiation of identity, particularly the conflict between tradition and modernity, along with the complexities of belonging in both a post-colonial world and a globalised society. He reimagines and deconstructs cultural symbols and traditions, uncovering new perspectives that challenge conventional ideas of nationality and identity.
Baghriche has also been included in major international exhibitions, including the Dakar Biennale, Senegal, the Gwangju Biennale, South Korea, and the Triennale of Sorocaba, Brazil. Fayçal also participated in the 54th Venice Biennale as part of the first pan-Arab pavilion, ‘The Future of Promise’. Other selected group exhibitions include the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Villa Arson, Nice, Centro Pecci, Prato, Malmö Konstmuseum, Sweden, the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Salt Lake City, the Arab Image Foundation, Beirut, The Mosaic Rooms, London, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and the Museum of Modern Art of Algiers.
