Ala Younis

Ala Younis (b. 1974, Kuwait) is a Jordanian artist engaged in curatorial, film, and publishing projects. Younis often seeks instances where historical and political events collapse into personal ones. Her work also looks into how the archive’s lacunas manipulate the imagination. Among her notable projects are those focused on the history of architecture, looking at the roles of women in shaping public spaces, as well as questioning the impact of historical events on urban and social development. She is based in Abu Dhabi.

Younis's work has been exhibited in numerous international art institutions and galleries, and she has contributed to discussions around the intersection of art and politics, especially in relation to the Arab world and post-colonial contexts. Younis holds a B.Sc. in Architecture from the University of Jordan and an MRes from Goldsmiths College. She has participated in group exhibitions and major biennials, including Venice, Istanbul, Gwangju, Ljubljana, Kaunas, Ural, Orleans, Sharjah and Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah. In 2012, Younis co-founded Kayfa ta, an independent publishing initiative focused on research, exhibition, and publishing related to independent practices. In 2023, she was appointed as the Artistic Director of Akademie der Kunst der Welt (Cologne), and she is a Research Scholar at the Al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art at New York University Abu Dhabi.

Younis’ works are in several major institutional collections, including: Barjeel Art Foundation, Dubai/Sharjah, UAE; Darat al Funun – The Khalid Shoman Foundation, Amman, Jordan; Jameel Art Collection, Dubai, UAE; Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, Amman, Jordan; Le Frac Centre-Val de Loire, Orléans, France; Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah, UAE; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, USA; Uppsala Art Museum, Uppsala, Sweden.

Important publications have reviewed Ala Younis' work including Art Asia Pacific and Frieze.
